In this blog post, I’ll summarize my academic experiences and school activities during high school, examples of how I practiced consideration and cooperation, as well as my motivation for applying and my career preparation.
Academic Experiences and Reflections
I began high school with the belief that focusing on classwork was key to maintaining good grades. I managed my grades by actively participating in class and mastering the fundamentals, and this process wasn’t as stressful as I had anticipated. However, I didn’t want to limit my studies to just maintaining my grades; I also wanted to pursue my genuine interest in the field of information and communications technology.
By allocating my time efficiently, I ensured I had enough time for my schoolwork while also investing time in exploring the latest trends and technologies through books and academic papers. Rather than delving deeply into the subject at a major-level, I focused on understanding trends and building a foundation of basic knowledge to reduce my workload, and I solidified my fundamentals in the field through lectures and books. By pursuing the studies I was passionate about alongside my regular coursework, I was able to improve my academic efficiency and maintain my motivation for learning.
For me, the most important factor in improving my study efficiency was “motivation.” I maintained my interest by collecting and analyzing materials related to information and communications technology, and I managed my high school studies according to a plan I set for myself. As a result, I gained a sense of responsibility and confidence in my studies, and I was able to accumulate experience in self-directed learning rather than simply managing my grades.
Major School Activities and Reflections
After entering high school, I joined a club focused on creating mobile and web applications, where I worked on building websites and developing games. At first, putting knowledge I’d only read about in books into practice felt awkward and difficult, but through trial and error with my teammates, I gradually became more comfortable. I found the process of creating things myself deeply engaging, and my programming skills grew through hands-on experience.
Our club operated in a relatively autonomous environment, where we could immediately put ideas into practice. We also collaborated with related clubs and support centers outside the school to carry out projects, repeatedly identifying and solving problems on our own rather than waiting for instructions from teachers. Through this process, I truly realized the importance of communication and collaboration, and gained valuable experience in learning and growing through failure.
At first, I focused on achieving notable individual accomplishments, but through numerous collaborative projects, I came to realize that creating outcomes that align with the project’s purpose and value is far more significant. I learned that the team’s overall performance takes precedence over individual ability, and as a result, I developed an attitude of respecting each other’s roles and working together to achieve our goals.
In particular, the school website development project was a significant experience carried out as an extension of my club activities. Based on the consensus that the outdated school website needed improvement, we consulted with the principal and formed a task force from among the club members, and I participated in that team. We gave careful consideration to a wide range of aspects—from design concepts to menu structure and strategies for boosting community engagement—while gathering student feedback through surveys. We also researched extensive materials and implemented programs to incorporate the latest trends and technologies.
The responsibility of creating a website that represented our school was immense, and my friends and I held numerous meetings and worked through the night to complete the project. By refusing to take the easy way out and striving to improve the quality until the very end, we were able to produce a result that satisfied everyone. Through this experience, I went through the entire process of planning, design, implementation, and verification, and developed practical problem-solving skills and a sense of responsibility.
Examples of Consideration, Sharing, and Cooperation, and My Reflections
The experience of creating a game with my friends and uploading it to the school website was a firsthand lesson in the importance of consideration and cooperation. I proposed the project—and worked with my teammates on the planning and development—hoping that my friends could relieve stress through accessible games, such as simple obstacle-avoidance games or plant-growing simulations.
During the project, we occasionally faced disagreements or emotional friction. In those moments, I reminded everyone that we had “started this for fun” and acted as a mediator to prevent emotions from escalating.
If anyone felt hurt, I encouraged them to go for a walk and talk it out, or to take a break with a different activity to clear their head.
I also made a conscious effort to always speak positively and considerately, and encouraged my teammates to do the same. Positive language had a significant impact on the work atmosphere, and as a result, both our development speed and the quality of the final product improved. As an atmosphere of mutual consideration and sharing took shape, our teamwork strengthened, and our friendships grew even closer.
Ultimately, we overcame trial and error through positivity and dialogue, and the completed game was posted on the school website, where it gained popularity among other students. Through this experience, I learned firsthand how much the power of consideration, sharing, and communication contributes to achieving a common goal.
Efforts and Preparation Related to Motivation for Application and Career Plans
I am someone who feels a deep passion for learning itself. While diligently studying for my school courses, I have engaged in academic exploration by collecting materials related to the field of information and communications technology, researching books and academic papers, and even writing my own papers. Through club activities, I taught myself programming and developed my self-improvement skills; I also found that I absorbed what I learned more effectively when I set and carried out my own plans.
If I am accepted into the Department of Information and Communications Engineering at KAIST, I will persevere to the very end with a willingness to learn and a determination to take action. Since I believe the information and communications field is highly responsive to technological and consumer trends, I aim to become a highly skilled researcher by developing the ability to analyze technologies and trends and consider how to add value.
Furthermore, I believe it is important to acquire knowledge across diverse fields, including humanities, philosophy, culture, and the arts. Since information and communications technology is closely intertwined with human life, a human-centered perspective and ethical judgment are essential, in addition to technical expertise. Therefore, I intend to build a broad liberal arts foundation to become a professional who can infuse technology with human values.
In particular, I believe that ethical awareness and security consciousness are crucial in the field of information and communications technology. Due to the sensitivity of anonymity and personal information, we must always consider the safety and ethical application of technology. I have a strong interest in secure programming, and my goal is to research and develop robust security technologies that can be applied in both national and corporate settings.
Through my studies in information and communications technology—which began out of pure curiosity—I discovered my aptitude and my dreams, and I have been steadily preparing myself. At KAIST’s Department of Information and Communications Engineering, I will continue this exploration and grow as a researcher and as a professional who contributes to society.
