Academic Plan – What Does It Take to Become a Fashion Designer?

In this blog post, I’ll introduce my plan and academic path to becoming a fashion designer.

Reasons for Pursuing This Field

I once attended a graduation fashion show for the Department of Apparel Design with my older sister, who is four years older than me. Watching my sister and her friends working busily behind the glamorous stage gave me a glimpse of what a fashion show is really like. I also realized that a fashion show isn’t created by a single piece of work alone, but requires the harmonious collaboration of everyone involved—designers, models, and assistants.
Watching the unique and fantastic fashion creations of those college students, I developed a dream of doing this kind of work myself. When I imagined how rewarding it would be to design the clothes I want to wear and see them commercialized so that many people could wear them, I felt a strong desire to become a designer as soon as possible. After acquiring all the necessary skills to become a fashion designer at your university, I want to devote my passion to creating practical and comfortable clothing.

Academic Plan and Goals

To channel my passion and determination into the Department of Apparel Design, I have established the following academic plan. To guard against any potential laziness on my part, I will strive to maintain my status as an academic excellence scholarship recipient for all four years while also diligently studying foreign languages. Furthermore, I will solidify my foundational knowledge of fashion by taking core courses such as fashion marketing, materials research, fashion promotion planning, and fashion psychology. I will also strive to develop a broad perspective that allows me to understand not only fashion itself but also the interrelationship between clothing and people.
I understand that modern clothing studies is a comprehensive discipline organically linked to society, economics, art, science, and technology. Therefore, I recognize that the clothing studies program will be quite challenging, as this profession requires a deep understanding of rapidly changing consumer psychology across various fields; however, I will diligently pursue my studies while keeping my dream of becoming a fashion designer in mind.

Plans After Graduation

First, after graduating from your university, I would like to pursue graduate studies to earn a master’s and doctoral degree in clothing studies. The area I wish to research further in graduate school is functional clothing for workers engaged in specialized occupations. I believe that specialized workwear, designed specifically for particular jobs and activities, inherently involves research into both patterns and design.
From factory workers’ uniforms to athletes’ jerseys, clothing has now transcended the simple functions of “covering” and “displaying” to become a subject of scientific inquiry that demands the utmost “efficiency.” Therefore, in graduate school, I wish to research modern clothing science based on functionalism, such as the uniforms worn by national soccer team players.

Self-Introduction

The motto I hold dear is “一切唯心造” (Everything is created by the mind). This is a Buddhist term meaning that everything depends solely on the mind—it implies that “a person can accomplish anything depending on their mindset.” I believe there is no difference between difficult and easy tasks. If you approach a task thinking, “This is hard,” it will truly become difficult; but if you think, “I’ll grow through this task,” it will become something worth trying—and even easy.
I am the kind of person who, unless a task is absolutely impossible—beyond a person’s capabilities—encourages friends, seniors, and juniors by saying, “Let’s try it one more time. You can do it.” This positive mindset has sparked my motivation for work, allowing me to resolve even the most difficult challenges more easily. Above all, I have resolved that I am my most precious self and that I must devote my entire life to the path of self-improvement.
